Roman was a 24-year-old lawyer when he answered his country's call to arms at the start of his career. He was tragically killed in fighting outside Izium on 9 June 2022. In his short career, Roman took on corruption, embraced a range of social causes and was a credit to his chosen profession.
In recognition of Roman's courage and leadership, an annual scholarship in his name has been established to assist community activists — passionate about creating social change and ready to dedicate themselves to social initiatives and the public sector — to pursue a legal education.
Roman is an inspiration to lawyers who have had the privilege of practising many years longer than he was able to. It is an honour to serve his legacy by supporting the next generation of Ukrainian lawyers to follow Roman's path and example.
The Scholarship supports exceptional law students who combine academic excellence with a proven commitment to public service.
These are young people who engage in civic initiatives, social projects, and community leadership — and who show the courage to act in courtrooms, institutions, and everyday life.
The Scholarship fully funds each scholar, covering the full cost of a master's degree at a prestigious Ukrainian university — including tuition fees and some living expenses.
By removing financial barriers, the Scholarship invests in a generation of principled young lawyers who will shape a society grounded in justice, accountability, and respect for human dignity.
The Scholarship is administered by the Charitable Fund in memory of Roman Ratushny, with the support of Ukrainian law firm AVELLUM. The Scholarship is funded by private donations.

“If you've practised law for many years, and want to serve the next generation of our profession, there can be no better way than supporting the heirs to Roman's legacy in Ukraine. Young lawyers, striving to change their country, deserve our support.

“Reading through the applications makes me feel hopeful for Ukraine and for the world. I wish we could do more for all applicants, as they do so much for others.

“It's so hard to judge those who are better and stronger than you. When I was their age, I was neither that academically excellent, nor did I try to make the world a better place. Every applicant who has been shortlisted for the award is a superstar in my eyes. I still think of some of those who didn't win and wonder would they deliver on their ambitious projects if they got our support?

“Each round of the competition is both difficult and encouraging. It is never easy to choose one winner, knowing that other outstanding candidates will not be selected. At the same time, it is inspiring to see so many thoughtful, dedicated and socially minded students. I am also very glad that the programme is beginning to create a real sense of community and mentorship among all participants.
